Spring High School Bands

Since my wife Helen gave me a turntable that plugs into the computer, I can get all my old LPs transferred into WAV, AIFF, or MP3 files, including the recordings of Spring High School Bands from my sophomore through senior years.

There are some pops and hisses in these MP3s, because they were pulled from 30-year-old vinyl. I hope to eventually get the bad pops filtered out, but it will require some effort. The first time that I tried simple noise filtering on them, I managed to lose most of the low brass sound. (Is it trying to tell me something there?)

Notes:

  1. Steve played string bass in 75-76 Concert Band.
  2. Helen played B♭ clarinet in 75-76 Cadet Band.
  3. Helen played B♭ clarinet in 76-77 Symphonic Band.
  4. P. D. Q. Bach's "Grand Serenade" consists of four movements; unfortunately, only the first two movements made it onto the record. Really a shame, since the "percussion accident" at the beginning of the fourth movement was far better than could be hoped for, with a cymbal that took nearly 20 seconds to settle. (See PDQ Bach web page for more info.)
  5. In case you're wondering about the sound at the end the second movement of "Grand Serenade", it is the entire clarinet section gargling.
  6. Steve played string bass in 76-77 Concert Band.
  7. About 15 seconds into "Zacatecas", the record hit a skip while I was out of the room, and it imported the same 1.8 seconds a total of 113 times before I discovered it and forced it to move on. I reduced the repetition to a single pop; I hope I kept the beat correctly and didn't actually lose anything.
  8. Sound quality of the 1977-1978 album leaves much to be desired. Easily heard is a warp in the discs introduced by their spending an entire September weekend on the front seat of my father's pickup truck before I even knew that the album was released.
  9. I don't know whose brilliant idea it was to list all of the administration and even the middle school band directors on the 1978 album jacket, yet mention not one single band member's name!
  10. Helen played B♭ clarinet and Steve played string bass in 77-78 Symphonic Band, except in "Selections from The Wiz", in which Steve played electric bass guitar.
  11. Hindemith's "Symphony in B♭" consists of three movements, but Symphonic Band performed only the first movement.
  12. On the 1978 album jacket, all composers are listed by last name only. I have tried to determine exactly which Wagner composed this march, but every Internet reference I could find for "Wagner" and "Processional March" was to Richard Wagner's traditional wedding processional ("Here Comes the Bride"), which this piece definitely is not.
